Benztropine is prescribed to alleviate symptoms of Parkinson's disease and to manage involuntary movements resulting from certain psychiatric medications, like antipsychotics such as chlorpromazine or haloperidol. This medication belongs to the anticholinergic class, which functions by blocking acetylcholine, a natural substance in the body. By doing so, it helps reduce muscle stiffness, excessive sweating, and saliva production, while also enhancing mobility in individuals with Parkinson's disease. Additionally, anticholinergics can relieve severe muscle spasms in the back, neck, and eyes, which can be side effects of psychiatric treatments. It also helps reduce muscle rigidity, known as extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS). However, Benztropine is ineffective for movement issues related to tardive dyskinesia and might worsen them. This drug is not recommended for children under the age of 3.
